Direct Free Kick Rules Video on How To Play Faster: • How To Play Faster In Soccer Link to Soccer Shooting & Finishing book: https://amzn.to/314tnVt A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits a foul against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force. Stick around until the end to hear what those fouls are. Rule 1 for a Direct Free Kick in Soccer - In nearly all instances free kicks are taken from the place where the foul occurred. Except a free kick can be taken anywhere inside the 6-yard box also called the goal area if the foul was committed there. Also, a penalty kick is considered a direct free kick, but it is for fouls committed inside the penalty area, also known as the 18-yard box. Rule 2 of Direct Free Kick Soccer - The ball must be stationary and the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player This prevents the free kick taker from just dribbling the ball. If the person taking the free kick does not follow this rule, than an indirect free kick is awarded to the other team. Rule 3 for Free Kick Rules in Soccer – The ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves. Just tapping or stepping on the ball is not enough to be considered a touch. Rule 4 for Direct Free Kick Rules in Football – Players on the opposing team must be at least 10 yards from the ball. A recent rule change is that if at least 3 players from the defending team form a wall, then all attacking players must remain at least 1 yd from the wall until the ball is played. If an attacking player doesn’t follow this rule, then an indirect free kick is awarded to the other team. Rule 5 for Free Kick Rules in Football - Feinting and pretending to take a free kick to confuse opponents is acceptable. But keep in mind that players in the wall from the other team might start creeping closer if you do a fake shot or fake pass. If when a free kick is taken, an opponent is closer to the ball than 10 yards, the kick is retaken unless it is to the attacking team’s advantage. But if a player takes a free kick quickly and an opponent who is less than 10 yards from the ball intercepts it, the referee will allow play to continue. However, an opponent who deliberately prevents a free kick being taken quickly may receive a yellow card for delaying the restart. So, the fouls that will create a direct free kick are: • charging • jumping at • purposely kicking or attempting to kick • pushing • striking or attempting to strike (including head-butting) • tackling without making contact with the ball first • tripping To make it easier, think about it like this, if a foul involves contact, it is penalized by a direct free kick or penalty kick. Also, here are some other fouls that can result in a direct free kick: • a handball foul (except for the goalkeeper within their penalty area) • holding an opponent • impeding an opponent with contact • biting or spitting at someone • throwing an object at the ball, opponent, referee, or makes contact with the ball with a held object Fun fact: If the ball hits anywhere on your arm other than your shoulder, it is considered a handball, unless your arms are directly at your sides and therefore considered an extension of your body.
