So who remembers Snap? It's a CITV sitcom from the late 90s that revolved around a boy named Ben and his photographer father Dave. The spanner in the works is that, while Dad has matured properly and settled down, his dodgy old schoolmate Paul has forgotten to grow up all together and is always looking to pull a fast one and finding himself in "situations". Anyway, this first episode, called Smile Please, was originally broadcast on Monday, 24th February, 1997 (so, unbelievably, we're coming up to the 20th anniversary at the time of upload.) Dad's decided to sell the car, but Ben would rather he give it to nanny Ellen, who is struggling to get anywhere on time. Meanwhile, Paul has found a client in desperate need of a passport photo and willing to pay through the nose for it. As a curtain raiser, I think this is really quite good. A little time is necessarily set aside to establish the characters and tone, but there's still a solid story with a coherent plot, which is something you're not always guaranteed with a brand new show. I should point out that this is a Tetra production - that's the company which was formed out of the ashes of Thames - and so this ran at the same time as their flagship sitcom Mike and Angelo. With that in mind, and knowing that the shows shared some of the same writers, I think the producers were determined that Snap should be set in an explicitly non-fantasy world, to avoid unfair comparisons. (Although they obviously didn't feel that strongly, or they wouldn't have given the respective houses the exact same front door.) Just for the sake of chronology, this first series of Snap also overlapped precisely with the airing of the final series of Cone Zone, another of Tetra's comedies, so I wonder if this was deliberately lined up as a successor or whether that's just a coincidence. It ran for three years until 1999, clocking up a total of 20 episodes. So what do you think? There may be a few more uploaded if there's interest out there. To rattle through the main cast very quickly, Ben is played by Dean Cook, who went on to appear in Time Gentlemen Please, The Queen's Nose, My Dad's the Prime Minister, and the aforementioned Mike and Angelo. Dave is Gerard Horan, who's had recurring parts in The Singing Detective, London's Burning, Lark Rise to Candleford, Detectorists, and is apparently Mr Potts in the upcoming Beauty and the Beast. Paul is Ian Reddington, who was Richard Cole in EastEnders and Vernon Tomlin in Coronation Street; around the time of Snap, he was also in The Queen's Nose, and his IMDB intriguingly lists "Chief Clown" in Doctor Who. Ellen is Leanne Hailwood, who disappointingly boasts a credit in The Bill and not much else, I'm sorry to say. I wonder what became of her. Meanwhile, the guest star of this particular episode is Gavin Richards - a regular in early Mike and Angelo as Brett Douglas, but more famously Harold Fox in Hi-de-Hi!, Captain Bertorelli in 'Allo 'Allo, and Terry Raymond in EastEnders. To end on a surprising note, this was directed by Charlie Hanson, who I think it's fair to say isn't a household name. Charlie had already directed a heap of Birds of a Feather and Desmonds by this point, but subsequently went on on to produce (deep breath) Lee and Herring, Harry Hill, Lee Evans, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Not Going Out, Armstrong and Miller, Extras, Life's Too Short, Derek, and the recent David Brent: Life on the Road. You weren't expecting that, were you? Me, neither. Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
