With a very simple circuit, the Output voltage can be varied from 1.25V to 37V with current rating 0.01A to 1.5A As lm317 is a linear voltage regulator so it is not so efficient but the circuit is very simple. so it is widely used in different applications like adjustable DC power supply, fan speed controller, LED dimmer etc. By solving a simple LM317 output voltage equation you can easily use LM317 as any fixed voltage regulator of 78XX series.
