The Churchill AVRE — an engineering tank born out of the disaster at Dieppe in 1942. Canadian and British engineers took a standard Churchill Mk III, pulled out the 6-pounder gun, and replaced it with a Petard spigot mortar. The result was a vehicle that could demolish a concrete bunker with a single 18 kg "flying dustbin" round from point-blank range. The effective range was about 80–100 yards. Loading required a crew member to lean out of the hatch, completely exposed. The whole process took around 30 seconds under ideal conditions, much longer in combat. Despite all of this, the AVRE became one of the most important vehicles on D-Day, operating on Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches as part of Hobart's 79th Armoured Division. Beyond the mortar, the tank could carry fascines, folding bridges, mine rollers, and bulldozer blades — a genuine multi-tool for breaching fortified lines. One famous incident near Tilly-sur-Seulles saw an AVRE crew knock out a Panther tank with the Petard — a weapon nobody considered anti-tank. #ChurchillAVRE #HobartsFunnies #PetardMortar #DDay #WW2Tanks
