An introduction of NCDHHS Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing's new director. Below is the transcript. [Start transcript Visual description: NCDHHS DSDHH Director, Tony Davis wearing a grey suit and tie standing in front of navy wall. Tony signing: Hello, my name is Tony Davis. I am the new director of the NC Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or DSDHH. As you are aware, Jan Withers, the previous director retired after 19 years in the role. We thank her for many accomplishments here at DSDHH and wish her well in retirement. I am proud of the work that we have done at DSDHH and am excited about the work we will continue to do. As a division, we have been heavily involved in educating agencies, business, and others about the barriers Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind communities face. That education has led to many experiencing greater access in their services and community. Our ongoing work with the court system, emergency management, the prison system, hospitals, doctors and others will continue to remove barriers and create greater communication access for the people they serve. DSDHH, myself and our entire team of staff are dedicated to you, our community, and are committed to providing critical resources and advocacy to all Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind communities. We are here to support you! About me: I grew up a little hard of hearing. Until I was 35, I woke up one morning with no hearing and became fully deaf. I decided to go to Gallaudet University, earn a master’s degree in social work and learn ASL at the same time. Learning ASL and experiencing Gallaudet enriched my life and provided me with the ability to have access to language and communication. I bring 25 years of experience working in the health and human services field, including 7 years as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist in Minnesota. I have been with DSDHH for 6 years working as a Hard of Hearing Services Coordinator and recently as a program manager. I am excited to share some priorities that DSDHH will focus on in the next year. First: Communication access in health care. Second: Communication access for older adults. Third: Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and their families. Fourth: Services and resources for DeafBlind individuals. I plan to host town hall meetings around the state to listen to you and gain an understanding of the barriers you are currently facing. We will keep you informed of the dates and locations of these town halls. I look forward to meeting you and the opportunity to engage even more with our incredible community. Thank you.
