Get perfect chainline every time on your bike! Chainline is about getting the front chainring in a straight line with the rear cog. Perfect chainline means no dropped chains and less chain noise. It isn't vital to the mechanical efficiency of a bike but it is very important for fixed gear bikes for safety. Generally, the rear wheel chainline cannot be changed unless you change the dish, so the front chainring, crank and bottom bracket must match the rear wheel. ....................................................... Example Front Chainline Calculation DOWNTUBE TO CHAINRING (OUTSIDE TO OUTSIDE) = 76 MM DOWNTUBE WIDTH = 53 MM CHAINRING WIDTH (THICKNESS) = 4 MM FRONT CHAINLINE = 76 - (53/2) - (4/2) = 47.5 MM ....................................................... Example Rear Chainline Calculation DROPOUT WIDTH (INSIDE TO INSIDE) = 120 MM REAR COG TO DROPOUT (INSIDE TO INSIDE) = 14 MM REAR COG WIDTH (THICKNESS) = 2 MM REAR CHAINLINE = (120/2) - 14 - (2/2) = 45 MM ....................................................... Correction: 3/32" chains are 5, 6, 7, and 8 speed chains, not 9 speed chains. 9 speed chains are 11/128" and may or may not work with a 3/32" chainring/cog depending on the thickness of the sprocket. Tip: If you use freewheel spacers, check how many threads are normally used without them first! If too little threading is remaining your freewheel could become loose and mess up the wheel hub threads. You may only be able to use 1mm or 2mm of freewheel spacers. Pro tip: Make sure the crank arms are tightened all the way onto the frame per torque spec because if they are a little too loose it might still be able to go a few more millimeters inboard, which will change your front chainline.
