Velcro and Klingon are twin Grey-Headed Flying-Foxes babies. They're just over 2 weeks old and were removed from their mum when she was unable to care for them after she hit her head and knocked herself silly. Mum Riki is recovering slowly, in care with a carer who is great with head injuries. Tonight the twins were moved to this carer so they can be near their mum while she recovers. She may not take them back, or they may not want to go back to her, but a slow attempt at reunion will be made over the next few days. If they are unable to be reunited and cared for by their mum, the twins will be raised by a carer. At this stage we have no idea if the reunion will be successful or not. Twins aren't common in rescues. We don't know how common twin births are in the wild. We do occasionally see mums with a baby under each wing in the early part of the season, but they can't fly with growing babies who will weigh up to half their bodyweight by the time the babies are thermoregulating and able to be left in the colony overnight. Generally the weaker twin drops off leaving mum with a single baby she can manage to raise. I often wonder if some of the scrawny babies we find on the ground in the absence of a dead or injured mum bat around, are the weaker of twins who have dropped off. Update: The twins' mum Riki was improving enough that her twins were reunited with her. Sometimes this is a tricky process where the baby may not want mum or the mum may not want her baby back, but Riki just took the twins back and the babies went straight onto her like they'd only been away a few minutes. YAY I love happy endings. Further Update: Mum Riki was unable to manage both babies even in care, and the decision was made to remove little Velcro from mum and hand raise her separately. Velcro was renamed Ruby Tuesday, and despite some feeding difficulties in the start, she has grown and thrived. She is about 3 weeks younger developmentally than her brother Klingon, who has already gone into creche so he can be released in about a month. Velcro/Ruby Tuesday will go to creche in the next week or so and be released in about 2 months. Mum Riki is slowly improving. She had a significant head injury which is taking time to heal. Her trend continues upwards.
