Through the lens of Dennis Bartram's personal experiences, it reveals a powerful shift from technique-based training to intuitive body movement, emphasising the Flow of energy, alignment with nature, and healing through anatomical understanding. The message is clear: real mastery lies in internal calm, not external form. Highlights Elite Warriors Avoid Technique Real warriors avoid rigid techniques in battle; they seek openings and end fights within seconds. Hatsumi's system isn't based on techniques but on anatomical and energetic principles. The concept: technique can make you die, but movement born from intuition saves you. Medicine and Martial Arts as One Ancient scrolls from the Hichibuku Goshinjutsu taught healing through vulnerable body points. Hatsumi taught that martial and medical arts were interconnected, sharing anatomy and intention. The same point that harms could also heal, depending on intention and application. Dennis's Path to Hatsumi Already trained in osteopathy and chiropractic methods, Dennis recognised deeper wisdom in Hatsumi's teachings. A wrist lock demo left Dennis unable to move his hand. Hatsumi used subtle energy, not brute force. Hatsumi warned: it's not about the point, it's about the entire body's movement behind the point. Rejecting Techniques, Embracing Flow Hatsumi discouraged learning from other instructors to preserve the purity of his teachings. He emphasised body mechanics, intuitive movement, and the concept of "Shimmy" over structured form. Martial applications stemmed from natural, flowing movement, not rehearsed actions. Warriors Must Know Healing Too Warriors needed to heal themselves and others during battle, knowing herbs, joints, and energy flows. "Anatomy of Budo" became the core of Hatsumi's teachings, aligning movement with deep body knowledge. Only those with a foundation in anatomy could grasp the full picture of his philosophy. Meditation on the Move & Mushin No mind, "Mushin" is a Japanese concept that translates to "no mind" or "empty mind." It refers to a state of mental clarity and calmness, free from distractions, emotions, and preconceived notions. The term is derived from the kanji characters for "nothingness" (無, mu) and "mind" (心, shin), and is often associated with Zen Buddhism and martial arts, where it describes a state of being unencumbered by thoughts of anger, fear, or ego. Hatsumi taught that power comes from the spine and healing from a benevolent heart. Mental clarity (Mushin) is essential; warriors must stay calm, avoid anger, and cultivate a state of mindlessness. Techniques like mudras and breathing were used to calm the mind and enhance healing. This fusion of ancient wisdom, intuitive movement, and healing arts feels like it's walking the same path you are, especially around alignment and empowering communities through deeper understanding.
