Left hemicolectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing part of the left colon. This surgery is commonly performed for patients with tumors or cancers located in the left side of the colon. One of our patients recently underwent this surgery, and like many others, had questions about the procedure, how it's done, and what makes it different from other colon surgeries. Let’s walk through the process to give you a clear understanding. Understanding the Digestive System Before diving into the specifics of left hemicolectomy, it’s essential to have a basic understanding of the digestive system. The food we eat travels from the stomach to the small intestine and then into the large intestine, which begins on the right side of the body. The large intestine, or colon, is divided into different parts: the right colon, the transverse colon, and the left colon. When we perform a left hemicolectomy, we focus on the left side of the colon. The large intestine’s right part is referred to as the right colon, and the left part is the left colon. So, when we talk about a left hemicolectomy, we are removing part of the left colon. But what exactly does this involve? The Parts Involved in Left Hemicolectomy In a left hemicolectomy, we remove the portion of the colon that includes parts like the descending colon, sigmoid colon, and sometimes part of the transverse colon or the area near the splenic flexure (near the spleen). This is typically done when there’s a tumor present in these regions. For example, one of our patients had a tumor in the descending colon. The surgery involved removing the affected portion of the left colon, ensuring clean margins around the tumor, and then reconnecting the remaining parts of the digestive system. Differences Between Right and Left Hemicolectomy It’s important to note that there are differences between right hemicolectomy and left hemicolectomy. When performing a right hemicolectomy, the right part of the colon is removed, which is relatively straightforward. The small intestine is quite mobile and can easily be reconnected to the remaining colon. However, in a left hemicolectomy, the left colon is less mobile, making the reattachment process more complex. In some cases, a larger portion of the colon may need to be removed to ensure proper reattachment. How the Procedure is Done? The surgery can be performed in various ways: open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, or robotic surgery. The choice of method depends on several factors, including the tumor’s location, the patient’s condition, and the surgeon’s expertise. We ensure that the entire tumor, along with a margin of normal tissue and surrounding lymph nodes, is removed to prevent recurrence and ensure a successful outcome.
