(24 Aug 1995) English/Nat The fate of some 800 Krajina Serb refugees still trapped in the United Nations (U-N) base in Knin is being discussed by the U-N and the Croatian government. However, the future of those refugees suspected of war crimes is uncertain. For these Serbian refugees, their nightmare is almost over. They lost everything - their homes, their jobs and their freedom - in the Croatian offensive in Krajina. Since then they have sought safety in the U-N compound in Knin, Now all they want to do is to flee Croatia. However, Zagreb alleges that war criminals are amongst those seeking safe passage to neighbouring Serbia. The U-N is currently negotiating with Croatia on the procedure for identification and interrogation of suspected war criminals. SOUNDBITE: (English) "On the question of the people in the Knin compound, the Croatian authorities have told us that they expect us to hand over a number of people that they suspect of war crimes. Now under an agreement which we had with the local authorities in Knin, they were to hand-over a list of names and charges that we have not had. We have also agreed that people interviewed would be interviewed with proper international monitoring in the Knin compound itself. (Cutaway) We have an arrangement with the Croatian government - it's been agreed - and we would call on the Croatian government to respect its commitments it's made to us in respect of the people in the Knin compound." SUPERCAPTION: Chris Gunness, U-N spokesman Gunness said the evacuation is likely to take place over the weekend, but no decision has been taken yet on where the refugees will go.
