Verifiability Principle and the Leap of Faith: A Philosophical Examination This paper challenges the logical positivist principle of verifiability by introducing Søren Kierkegaard's leap of faith as a concept that could possibly serve as one of the dimensions of human understanding. Logical positivism, or logical empiricism, emerged at the beginning of the 20th century with the central tenet that meaningful statements must be capable of empirical verification or logical analysis. Consequently, metaphysical and religious faith was seen as flawed because it lacked empirical evidence or logical proof. According to the positivists, religious belief was seen as beyond rational analysis. In contrast to this, Kierkegaard's leap of faith emphasizes a decision to believe in something in the absence of rational proof. It is an act of the will and a decision to believe despite the lack of empirical evidence or logical certainty. While science continues to be vital, this perspective suggests that there is more to human existence than just empirical verification. Therefore, religious faith is significant even though it does not fall under the range of the verifiability principle. Abdi Kitesa (University of Szeged, Hungary)
