Much of what they play here was standard fare for a rock band at the time in the clubs - but it is something of a revelation to hear a youthful Max Webster doing Bowie, Zeppelin, Stones, and Deep Purple. Mitchell and Tilka swap lead vocals on the various tunes, and Bruton takes the mic for "Hard Drivin' Man" by The J. Geils Band. But it's the Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa tunes that show their prowess as players. Give "Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus" a listen - even without the baritone sax and honky tonk piano their arrangement is true to the original, with the band covering all the major parts with ease. Of all the originals present here, the only one that would eventually end up on a Max Webster album is Battle Scar. This piece is the most revelatory thing on this tape. The lyrics are mostly there, but musically it is very sparse apart from the giant organ intro by Bruton. There is barely any audience reaction to the piece upon its conclusion - if only they knew what that song would one day become. "Anna Lea" and "Don't Be a Moon" are amongst the stronger originals in their repertoire at the time, and are well worth comparing to their 1976 counterparts as the arrangements had grown considerably by then.
