Here is a cover of To Bid You Farewell, the epic closing track from Opeth's 1996 record Morningrise! It is unbelievable to me that this record is nearly 30 years old! When I first ordered my fretless FM Esphera bass, I knew this would be a song I would want to put together, but I didn't imagine I'd be able to put it together this quickly being a fretless bass novice! This tune is a lengthy acoustic ballad that opens with an extended twin acoustic guitar intro, with duel melodies intertwined with some busy fretless bass. The instrumental first 4 minutes of this song are nearly worth the price of admission alone! The middle of the song features some minimalist balladry with a particularly tasty and understated guitar solo from Mikael Akerfeldt in the middle. The remainder of the song is a long build up to a heavy, twin guitar metal climax, followed by a slow resolution back down to just duel acoustic guitars and vocals. Quite the musical journey! This song was a pure pleasure to put together, the guitar parts and the bass line are extremely fun to jam out and while busy, they never really felt like a struggle to learn!
