‘General strike if necessary’: Alberta unions declare intent to bring down provincial government

An unprecedented general strike may be coming to Alberta. Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) president Gil McGowan spoke on behalf of the Alberta labour movement on Wednesday, when classes resume after Premier Danielle Smith’s government invoked the Charter’s notwithstanding clause to order 51,000 teachers back to work. McGowan said the UCP deliberately chose the “nuclear option” in using Bill 2 and the clause to force striking teachers back on the job, when they could have pursued other avenues. In response, Alberta's public sector unions will begin the process of exploring a general strike that could see hundreds of thousands of workers walk off the job. No timeline has been set for job action. The unions are trying to organize something that has never been done in Alberta, McGowan said, which is why they did not announce a strike immediately as some had expected or hoped for.  McGowan spoke on behalf of the Alberta labour movement after province passed Bill 2, the Back to School Act, and invoked the notwithstanding clause this week.
