The Project on Indigenous Governance and Development, formerly the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development, at Harvard Kennedy School is the leader in research, teaching, leadership development, policy analysis, and pro bono advising for and with Native communities. The core mission of the Project is to arm Indigenous people with the tools needed to (re)build their nations and govern effectively. The Project has worked to uncover and support the conditions under which sustained, self-determined political, social, cultural, and economic strengthening is achieved by Indigenous communities. Based at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, the Project has beed awarded by tribes themselves for its pioneering work fostering the Indigenous renaissance that has taken hold in the U.S. and beyond. Founded in 1987 by Profs. Stephen Cornell (now Director Emeritus) and Joseph P. Kalt (Director), the Project's Senior Director is Megan Minoka Hill (Oneida).
