Poem 20: There, Not Here is a spoken word piece by Matthew McKenzie, exploring the experience of unpaid mental health carers being repeatedly referred elsewhere while support is delayed, missing or denied. My poem reflects the frustration of being told “go there, not here” then being passed between services, asked to repeat painful stories, and left navigating risk of a loved one and themselves without continuity. I speak of the emotional toll of referral loops, system gaps, and the quiet exhaustion unpaid carers carry while trying to keep their loved ones safe. This piece is taken from the poetry collection "Unpaid, Unseen and Yet Unbroken", which is a book in development at the time of this video. The book centres the lived experiences of minority unpaid mental health carers and aligns with themes within PCREF, carer inclusion, and listening as care. This poem is for: Unpaid mental health carers People working in mental health services Those interested in PCREF, equity, and lived experience Anyone who believes that being listened to matters More details about the book https://caringmindblog.com/2025/12/25...
