In this video, Dr. Donna shows how to use a DIY salve with essential oils to help heal a horse's fungal infection. Coconut oil provides a cooling and well preserved carrier and 25 drops of cedar or Thuja oil or tea tree oil (Melaleuca) and 25 drops of Lavender oil in 1 cup of melted coconut oil (hard at room temperature) to apply to the infection twice daily. The essential oil of lavender will immediately help the dermal discomfort as it will for a burn, taking the pain away through its effect on the local nerves. Note: there are several products available that contain trichloromethyl and petroleum products which can be quite effective (Equiderma skin lotion and others) but here I am showing a homemade product. This horse got the infection in the first place due to the overuse of his fly mask trapping moisture for too long on his face combined with his weakened biome and immunity after he was rescued. It also took almost 2 years to completely clear his intestinal parasites. Quick question: do you know the difference between essential oils and infused oils? The essential oils is a concentrated version of the plant medicine with one small bottle containing the volatile oils of hundreds of plants and flowers. For that reason, it can be expensive. But the infused oil is just a carrier oil like olive oil soaked with the herbs (here I used calendula, comfrey, plantain and St. Johns wort flowers all collected fresh) in the sun for 3-4 weeks. Unlike essential oils, infused oils will go rancid quickly so we melt bee's wax into the infused oil to make a salve which will have a long shelf life. If you are applying essential oils to melted coconut oil, there is about a six month shelf life when it hardens. Eventually, the essential oils will lose their effectiveness so it's best to use the product quickly. There are two considerations with shelf life of salves: One is the breakdown over time of botanical and medicinal chemicals and the other is bacterial or fungal contamination of the product.
