📌 This winter lecture was delivered by Shaykh Salih Aal al Shaykh at al Masjid al Haram in Makkah, on Friday, 20 Rajab 1447 AH (January 9, 2026 CE). 📖 The lecture explains the comprehensive principles for understanding the evidences of Tawhid of worship, clarifying how the Quran establishes Allah’s exclusive right to be worshipped and how these proofs are correctly understood, applied, and defended. Tawhid (التوحيد) Meaning: Singling out Allah alone in what is exclusive to Him. In creed: Singling Allah out in worship, lordship, and His Names and Attributes. Core focus of the Quran and all messengers. 🔷 2. Tawhid al Uluhiyyah / Tawhid al Ibadah Meaning: Singling Allah out in all acts of worship. Includes: du‘a, fear, hope, reliance, seeking help, sacrifice, vows, love of worship. This is the Tawhid most opposed by the mushrikun. 🔷 3. Tawhid al Rububiyyah Meaning: Singling Allah out as the Creator, Provider, Sustainer, Controller. Acknowledged by the mushrikun, but did not enter them into Islam. It necessitates Tawhid of worship, but does not replace it. 🔷 4. Tawhid al Asma wa al Sifat Meaning: Affirming Allah’s Names and Attributes as He affirmed them, without distortion, without denial, without asking how, without resemblance. 🔷 5. Ibadah (العبادة) Definition (Ibn Taymiyyah): Everything Allah loves and is pleased with from statements and actions, outward and inward. Includes: actions of the limbs, statements of the tongue, actions of the heart. 🔷 7. Shirk (الشرك) Meaning: Associating others with Allah in what is exclusive to Him. Major shirk: Directing worship to other than Allah (nullifies Islam). Minor shirk: Acts that lead to or resemble shirk but do not exit Islam. 🔷8. Nidd (الند) Meaning: An equal or rival set up with Allah. Includes: making intermediaries, equals, or rivals in worship, fear, hope. 🔷 9. Wathan (الوثن) Meaning: Anything worshipped besides Allah, even if not an image. Includes: graves, crosses, objects believed to bring blessing or intercession. 🔷 10. Sanam (الصنم) Meaning: An image that is worshipped. A type of wathan, but specifically an image. 🔷 11. Timthal (التمثال) Meaning: An image that is not worshipped. Prohibited in our Shariah, but not itself worship. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔶 Second: The Major Foundational Principles of Tawhid (الأصول الجامعة) 🔶 These are the main principles explicitly established in the lecture: 🔷 Principle 1: The evidences of Tawhid in the Quran are Muhkam (Decisive) They are clear, not ambiguous, and not from the mutashabih. Tawhid is the greatest obligation, so its proofs are decisive. 🔷 Principle 2: The evidences of Tawhid are Hakimah, not Mahkumah They govern all other proofs. They are not governed by: عقل (rational speculation), dreams, claims of miracles, spiritual experiences, status of awliya or saints. 🔷 Principle 3: The evidences of Tawhid are Kulliyyah (Universal) Apply to: prophets and non-prophets, angels and humans, righteous and sinners, all places (even graves and the Ka‘bah), all times. 🔷 Principle 4: The evidences of Tawhid are Mutanawwi‘ah (Diverse) Found in: commands to worship Allah, prohibitions of shirk, stories of prophets, victory of believers, destruction of mushrikun, verses of Jannah and Hellfire, laws of worship. 🔷 Principle 5: The evidences of Tawhid are understood through types of indication Dalalat al Mutabaqah (direct indication) Dalalat al Tadammun (inclusive indication) Dalalat al Iltizam (necessary implication) 🔷 Principle 6: The evidences of Tawhid require mastery of the Arabic language Knowing the difference between: ilah and rabb, worship and lordship.
