Snippets in my voice, originally from Side 2 of the LP "This is Mohd. Rafi." All bhajans were written by Madhukar Rajasthani. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The passing of composer Mohammed Zahoor Hashmi "Khayyam" has severed (at least physically) one of the strongest remaining links to that cherished era of legendary composers, poets, and musicians who first defined Indian popular music, judiciously applying stylistic elements from around the world to a strong core of traditional Indian melody. Though Khayyam's early films may not have been box office megahits, their music showed versatility and refinement without being heavy-handed. From those days, he was able to exploit that "special something" in a wide range of voices...for one, his "Phir Subah Hogi" is one of the "clinchers" for a section of my mind/heart being permanently cordoned off for the voice of Mukesh. While it was a welcome change for a composer of Khayyam's caliber to see the limelight in the 70s and 80s with soundtracks like "Kabhi Kabhi" and "Umrao Jaan", I will always remember him most for his earlier work, particularly his non-film compositions with likes of the inimitable Begum Akhtar and of course, Mohd. Rafi. Avid listeners will immediately recognize these excerpts, originally part of a non-film album simply entitled, "This is Mohd. Rafi" (since re-released on CD and other media under different names). The LP was a cherished part of our family collection growing up and I had absorbed these songs long before becoming acquainted with many of Mohd. Rafi's chartbuster film hits. Side One of the LP featured refined compositions and sensitive renderings of classic Urdu poets like Dagh and Ghalib. To this day, however, it's still the flip side of devotional melodies penned by eminent poet Madhukar Rajasthani that really has me hooked...rarely has a set of Krishna bhajans been done with such beauty and feeling. Both composer and singer have lavished utmost care and affection on the melodies, and the result is yet more emphatic proof that music has no religion. The internet/multimedia age means that not much is rare anymore...but even amongst admirers of Khayyam and Mohd. Rafi, it seems these songs are not as "top-of-mind" as they really should be. Hoping that this remembrance of mine prompts previously unexposed listeners to seek out (and those already familiar to take time for an unhurried listen to) these exquisite creations in their entirety. #mohdrafi #khayyam #bhajans
