Chester city walls located in the English city of Chester near the Welsh border are the most complete Roman and medieval defensive town walls in the UK with a length of 3.2km (2 miles). The Walls give exceptional views over the Roman Amphitheatre, castle, city streets, canal and river Dee. The entire walls can be walked in around 40 minutes depending on speed and ability. Chester (UK) was settled by the Romans in 74 AD, originally called Deva. From 100 AD the earth walls were reconstructed using local sandstone, to about 4.9 metres above the base with elaborately carved cornice and capstones. The walls continued to play a defensive roll for the city up until to end of the Civil War. 1707 saw the being of the Walls restoration and remodelling for recreation with notable additions such as the famous Eastgate Clock which over looks Bridgegate.
