Because of this big lie, the judge sends Papillon to prison for the rest of his life. He is sent to a very dangerous island prison far across the sea. In this awful place, the guards are mean and the rules are deadly. There, he meets a rich and smart prisoner named Louis. Louis has a lot of hidden money but cannot protect himself from the other rough prisoners. Papillon makes a secret promise to keep Louis safe from everyone. In return, Louis agrees to give Papillon the money he needs to run away. Together, the two men build a very strong and surprising friendship. Every day, they must face terrible problems, bad tricks, and the fear of dying. Even after hard punishments and being locked in dark, lonely rooms, Papillon refuses to give up.
