Think you can’t draw? Think again! Today on the Helen & Kath Craft podcast, we’re proving that if you can doodle a matchstick man, you’ve got all the talent you need to create something beautiful. It’s a busy Wednesday! We’re celebrating Helen and Mark’s Wedding Anniversary (congrats, guys! 🥂) and sending good vibes to Kath’s neighbour as she heads out after the show to help find his lost cat. 🐈⬛ In today’s creative session: The Tiny Brush Demo: Helen shows you how to forage and fashion a functional tiny brush using just pine needles and twine. The Power of Neurographic Art: Kath dives into the world of "Neurological Drawing." We explore the history of this meditative practice and how it can literally rewire your stress levels. The Science of Craft: We discuss the Effort-Driven Reward Cycle—why working with your hands makes your brain so much happier than scrolling on a phone. Whether you're a seasoned pro or your skill level stops at L.S. Lowry-style matchstick men, there is a seat at our crafting table for you! The "How-To" Corner Helen’s Pine Needle Brush Materials: Small bunch of pine needles, natural twine or jute, needle and thread, scissors. *Gather a small bundle of needles. Ensure they are clean and dry. The Binding (The Most Important Part) Take your twine or thread. Start about an inch up the handle and wrap it tightly downward toward the needles. Tie off your twine with a double knot and add a tiny drop of glue to the knot for extra security. Finally, use your scissors to trim the "bristle" ends of the pine needles. You can cut them straight across for a blunt brush or at an angle for a tapered, calligraphy-style effect. Kath’s Neurographic Art Guide The Origin: Developed by Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev in 2014, Neurographica is a creative method for transforming one’s world. The History: It’s based on the idea of connecting the conscious with the subconscious by rounding out "sharp" intersections in random doodles to mimic neural pathways. Benefits: It aids in stress reduction, problem-solving, and emotional processing. How to do it: Draw freeform "neuron" lines, identify where they cross, and "round out" every corner until the drawing looks fluid and organic. Add colour to the flow! Finally, Helen read Hank's Poem A Poym 5/12/95 I used to be so different, And now I'm just the same. I used to worry constantly (But I wast' one to blame) About the meaning of it all. I knew it all the time. The Truth, you see, is in us all. The rest's a pantomime. Sorrow is as sorrow does, Mischief can be fun. Purity? Impurity? No, Virtue is the one. Honesty is simply best. Ask anyone you meet, And if they tell you otherwise They're lyin' thru their teeth. Anger gets you nowhere fast, And fear's the cause of ire. The purest thing that we can do Is laugh at our desires. Love, tho' quite an icky word, Is great to give and get, And when I'm in that atmosphere 'S the bestest feelin' yet. I reckon we can spend our lives A-lookin' fer the Answers We've as much chance of findin' 'em As findin' cures fer cancers. There's only one thing left for us, And that's to live our lives, 'Cos the secret of the Universe Is 42.5 (to a close approximation, within experimental error - near enough, prob'ly!). by Haadli Parf We mentioned the legendary L.S. Lowry, an English artist famous for his mid-20th-century scenes of industrial Northern England. He proved that "simple" figures—his iconic matchstick men—could carry immense emotion and story. Helen’s Song: Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs by Brian and Michael (a tribute to Lowry!). Kath’s Song: Pictures of Matchstick Men by Status Quo (1968).
