A time when recordings felt fuller; the amplified sound richer; and the soulful troubadour was king. The Record Company is comprised of Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals), Alex Stiff (bass), and Marc Cazorla (drums). Their influences are heard throughout the work, dipping into sounds familiar to such greats as Delta Blues legend John Lee Hooker or bands like the Rolling Stones. Certainly, their debut album, Give It Back to You, successfully reimagines the rich soundscape that was Blues in the American South in the 1960s. The first note off the drum fill perfectly sets the tone for the entire ballad. Melancholic yet conciliatory, this is a song of heartbreak and pain. This lost love bleeds through the blended notes of the slide guitar. The heart-wrenching chorus settles into your body and reminds you of the purity of a love: “Got a hallow heart / I’m feeling wrong / got a dollar in my pocket for a midnight song.” While Rita Mae has left, her memory lives on and the only means to replace the emptiness is the music, the atmosphere, and the company found in the nearest juke-joint or honky-tonk, where all lost lovers find another to console. We hope the boys at the Record Company recover, if only to step back to the mic and make us swoon again.
