We caught WHAT? Mystery Animal! Lesser Siren

This was a welcome surprise during an outing while filming! We could not believe our eyes when we stumbled upon this Western Lesser Siren just miles from my house! Although these animals possess gills and are fully aquatic, they do possess lungs and will gulp air every once in a while! These elusive eel-like amphibians inhabit much of the southeastern United States and prefer sluggish moving water and swampy areas full of prey. These salamanders are fully aquatic and have foregone many traditional attributes terrestrial salamanders have, including back legs, in favor of aquatic adaptations!
