But when people throw the hook, one of the biggest mistakes you see is pulling the arm back to wind up. I'm guilty, too. In fact, I once tore my shoulder throwing wild hooks. During rehab, I swore I’d never throw a hook punch again... Until I realized the problem wasn’t the punch, it was my bad technique. Here's how I fixed it... I threw elbows! To me, throwing an elbow feels the same as throwing a hook. So, if you can practice the elbow safely first, you'll have a great foundation for the hook punch. That means you pivot the front foot, rotate the hips, tuck your chin, keep your guard up, and breathe on every strike. Once the elbow feels powerful, you can switch to your hand and practice the hook punch. Just make sure you keep your wrist straight! To make your hook even more devastating, throw the elbow right behind it. That's illegal in boxing, but great for self-defense. Do what you have to do to save your life! Two more tips... First tip: Always wind up your body, not your arm. You can wind up by slipping to the side, then hooking back or throwing a combination. Punching with one hand winds up the other. Second tip: As a general rule, you always want to minimize tension in your muscles. Following the natural lines of motion in your body does that. So, if you're punching the body, your thumb will tend to point up. Punching across the shoulder line, the thumb points to you. As you punch higher, the thumb tends to dip down. Whatever you do, just be sure your knuckles hit flush on the target and your elbow stays in line behind your fist. Do all that, and you'll be throwing a safe, powerful hook punch. Happy training!
