Having spent the past seven years as a professional travel and adventure film maker, I have been fortunate to see many incredible things. Having a fascination for the abandoned, I have put focus toward many abandoned places through these years, but none quite like this. I am from Canada, so my primary interest is in the history of my own country, especially because much of it is forgotten and undocumented. Even the smallest hint of a once booming area in Canada will fascinate me to no end, just imagining and picturing how things may have been in the hay days. Canada being such a new country, the amount of abandoned locations is quite small compared to many countries, Japan being possibly the greatest example. People have been living in Japan, advancing and growing for millennia, and with that great of a timespan, a certain amount of failure is inevitable. In the 1980's, Japan encountered a period of rapid and unsustainable growth, known as a bubble economy. Across the country is examples of this period, where companies expanded, expecting huge growth, to ultimately lose it all. Many of these company owners avoided responsibility by simply disappearing, while many still hold ownership to the properties but can not afford to repair. Either way, in Kinugawa Onsen, it has become a problem. There are 16 of these abandoned hotels in this small town, and countless homes and businesses, but the greatest fear is of the hotels along the Kinugawa River. 8 of these Ryokon are in very bad shape and at risk of collapsing into the river. The city of Nikko is currently trying to purchase or obtain the land beneath the hotels so that a demolition and cleanup can be done. The amazing thing about this town, is simply the condition of the abandoned buildings. They are in rough shape due to weather, the elements and no maintenance for decades, but the signs of vandalism are nearly non existent. This is typical for what you will see in Japan. The culture does not allow or encourage this type of behaviour, and remarkable, these rules are followed quite strictly. For a person like myself, the view of Kinugawa Onsen is nothing but spectacular, but for many of the locals it is a sad sight. For that reason, I am very thankful for the opportunity to have seen it myself, and I hope that the city will be able to safely demolish and rebuild. This area is so beautiful, it deserves to be preserved and enjoyed, without risk to the population or environment.
