In high-altitude dives exceeding 400 mph, shock waves formed on the wings, locking the elevator controls and causing an unrecoverable nose-down dive that killed numerous pilots. German fighters exploited this weakness by escaping through steep dives the P-38 couldn't follow. Lockheed engineer Kelly Johnson's team solved the crisis with ingeniously simple dive recovery flaps—small electrically-actuated plates under each wing that modified airflow to counteract the nose-down moment.
