In this episode of In The Kitchen With Matt, I will show you how to eat a Piel de Sapo also known as the Santa Claus Melon or Christmas Melon. I will also do a taste test. The Piel de Sapo got its name for a few reasons, the direct translation means "Toadskin" because the outside looks like a toad. It got the nickname of Santa Claus Melon or Christmas melon because of its long storage capabilities. It is ripe at the end of August beginning of September timeframe, but you can store it on the counter for 3 to 4 months before eating it. Pretty awesome! Where did the Piel de Sapo come from? It originated in Spain, but is grown quite a bit in California, Arizona, South America, Australia, and other places. It is closely related to the canary melon. What does the Piel de Sapo or Santa Claus Melon taste like? Depending on how ripe it is it can be sweeter than a Honeydew even a cantaloupe, although I have had some really sweet cantaloupe. In most cases, people think a Honeydew is the sweetest of all the melons. Of course, the taste is a matter of opinion and is subjective. It is softer and not as crisp as honeydew or cantaloupe. If you like either of those, you will like this melon.
