A pilar cyst (also known as a trichilemmal cyst) is one of the most common skin cysts. It typically occurs on the scalp. Multiple pilar cysts are not uncommon. Approximately 25% are partially calcified. They are entirely benign. Other cysts of the skin include epidermal inclusion cyst. This is also referred to as an epidermoid cyst and a follicular cyst of infundibular type. There is also steatocystoma and a pilomatricoma. The latter are derived from the sebaceous duct and the hair bulb matrix, respectively. Surgeons often refer to cysts as "sebaceous cysts". This is somewhat of a misnomer, as "sebaceous cyst" is not a defined entity in the pathology literature. Typically, when a surgeon refers to a lesion as a sebaceous cyst they are generally implying that it is an epidermal inclusion cyst/follicular cyst of infundibular type.
