Reminded earlier today that it was JD Souther's birthday today - who is the songwriter for The Sad Cafe. So brought the song to mind today. Having got my recording toys doing what I want them to do recently I recorded my version of this song that I've been playing acoustically for a few years. This is a single take with acoustic guitar and vocal mic, with a harmoniser giving instant harmonies from a separate mic on a separate track. Synth bass then over-dubbed and the whole mixed. Complete amateur - but sounds OK! (With COVID lockdown again - I guess can only get better!) With this recorded - I then remembered hearing today also what I had long suspected - that the Sad Cafe was indeed the Troubadour - or at least the cafe next door. And with pictures of this "sad cafe" for JD Souther, it seemed only right to give a picture "shout out" to some of the session pubs of my memory that will be finding things hard again over the next weeks. Definitely a "meet me at midnight...." set of thoughts for the musos that used to meet in these. And Happy Birthday JD!
