Dr. George Mandybur has performed more than 1,000 cases of deep brain stimulation over the last 25 years. He described it as, “Using precision to place a very small electrode in a very precise area in the brain…It's like electrical pharmacy giving them medication via electricity and evening them out.” DBS has been FDA approved to treat essential tremors since 1997 and Parkinson’s since 2001. “This is very much like a heart pacemaker, but the wire goes into the head rather than into the heart. Being that way, we can adjust the battery just like the cardiologists adjust the pacemaker, and we can make the system work differently depending on what the patient needs,” said Dr. Mandybur. After surgery, Dr. Mandybur works with patients to figure out the exact level of stimulation they need. “We have to sort of customize the stimulation. So we see, we try a little of this and see what happens. We try a little of that and see what happens. And back and forth a couple of times, usually you'll find a very good mix of a program that will work well for the patient.” Since the procedure can be performed with the assistance of a robot, “The incisions may be an inch or two. The hole we make in the skull is about the size of a nickel. And that's all we need,” said Dr. Mandybur.
