Weiters erklärt der Author die Gründe für stockende Reformen im Islam, und was für ein zeitgemäßes islamisches Denken in der heutigen Zeit benötigt wird. English Summary: In this book the author Wilfried Buchta writes about the reasons for the emergence of Islamic Fundamentalism throughout history and especially in our time. The introduction deals with the failure of Arab governments to provide for their people and the collapse of Arab Nationalism and Arab Socialism. Both had high aims but existed merely in propaganda and coupled with the losses against Israel led many in the Middle East to look for alternative solutions to their problems. As European and Western approaches and ideas did not prove applicable in the Middle East the desire emerged to return to the roots of modern Arab and Muslim civilisation, the memories of previous periods in Arab and Islamic history. Wilfried Buchta describes how the return to the fundamentals of Islam is in a way an escape from the dire circumstances of current times, and how the struggle of Islamic activists against secular Arabs caused the former to become even more dedicated to their cause, either through persecution or prosecution in their homeland or through escaping to Saudi Arabia, as in the case of members of the Muslim Brotherhood who merged their original ideas with Saudi Salafism, leading to a new more intense understanding of Islam. He also describes the dilemma of US foreign policy in the Middle East. If the Americans support several regional leaders then accusations of ruling by the method of “Divide and Conquer” quickly emerge. If they support one ruler then they are accused of supporting a dictator. The author also explains how exerting to much influence in the region can have an undesired outcome, as in the case of US-Iranian relations. He also details how Political Islam has over decades been underestimated by both domestic rulers and external powers. An additional topic are the differences between Sunni and Shia Islam, and how the latter played an apolitical role until 1979, whereas Sunni Islam always underwent many more interactions and interdependencies with local Arab rulers. Of interest are the explanations as to why Islamic fundamentalism emerged and increased in our time due to Muslims feeling themselves overwhelmed and challenged by the West, and through the increase of influence from Saudi Arabia. Whether it is possible to reform Islam is another question the author addresses, and what would be needed to achieve this. He lists the obstacles to achieve this such as the rigid structures in religious institutions and their understanding of Islam, as well as the chaos in the Middle East not making such a reform likely or top of the agenda. Finally, one must remember that a “reformer” may not harbour thoughts and ideas perceived as positive by both the local population and the outside world. Some “reformers” also live too detached lives from the general Muslim population, and develop ideas which are perceived as too elitist at best or are completely incompatible with society and its requirements and circumstances. The book ends with the development of several future scenarios for the Middle East, and future challenges such as mass youth unemployment in Saudi Arabia which harbour the potential for a further increase in Islamic fundamentalism. What I enjoyed particularly about the book is the way in which the author explains why developments occurred in a certain way, and why actors in the region took certain decisions, rather than condemning them for mistakes made without providing explanations for these. An absolute must read for someone wishing to do develop a deeper unbiased understanding of the Middle East region and Islam.
