We've ALL SUNG This CLASSIC HIT for DECADES...TURNS OUT It's About a SEX TOY! | Professor of Rock

Coming up, the story behind one of the biggest hits of 1966 Mellow Yellow by Donovan. Packed with hidden meanings and controversial themes, this song, somehow, managed to sneak past the old-fashioned ideology of the media gatekeepers' values and came close to topping the American Pop charts. It’s a song about recreational drugs, young desire, having a laid-back disposition, and, believe it or not, a sexual device with a very catchy name. The song also had a strange whispering backup vocal that many claimed was one of the Beatles…But was that just a myth? We’re exploring the origin and evolution of this '60s counterculture classic—one that would NEVER FLY in the 21st century… NEXT on Professor of Rock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers Kimberley Rumburg, Brent Gephart, Glenn Beardmore, Jennifer Selvidge, Carl Curcuruto ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album https://amzn.to/3tLsII2 The 80s Collection https://amzn.to/3mAekOq 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! When the song we’re featuring on this episode of POR hit the scene in ’66, a wild rumor spread that it was all about getting high on banana peels. Supposedly… you could scrape off the fibers, cook them over a low flame, and release some hallucinogenic magic. Nice try….Obviously, that was just a myth—just like the rumor about the song’s meaning. The truth? The song was actually about a vibrator called Mellow Yellow… Now before we start I have to tell you that this is one of the most interesting stories behind a song I’ve ever heard so you’ll want to watch till the end. Donovan Phillips Leitch—known to the world as Donovan—is a Scottish musician who captured the spirit of the 60s was the artist who conceived and created “Mellow Yellow,” one of the biggest hits of 1966. Donovan burst onto the British folk scene in 1965, but it didn’t take long before his unique blend of folk, pop, psychedelic rock, and jazz made him a global sensation. His sound became the soundtrack of the flower power movement. As a child, Donovan contracted polio, and the treatment left him with a limp. His family later moved to Hatfield, Hertfordshire, where music became his escape. At just 14, inspired by his family’s love of folk tunes, Donovan picked up the guitar and began carving out his own path. Though he briefly enrolled in art school, the pull of the road, and his bohemian dreams proved much stronger. He dropped out of school, guitar in hand, ready to chase the open road and the music that would define the counter-culture generation. Donovan's rise to fame began in 1965 with his live performances on the popular TV show Ready Steady Go! That same year, he signed with Pye Records and quickly made a name for himself with his folk-inspired sound. His early singles, “Catch the Wind,” “Colours,” and “Universal Soldier”, became hits in the UK, cementing his place in the British music scene But, Donovan's career truly took off when he signed with CBS/Epic in the U.S., marking the start of a fruitful collaboration with British producer Mickie Most. In September 1966, Donovan hit the big time with "Sunshine Superman," which shot to #1 on the Hot 100 and reached #2 in the UK. Just a few months later, in December, "Mellow Yellow”
