Bay Vision Virtual Meetup, held on April 22, 2021: Machine learning in medical imaging from image acquisition to interpretation. Host: Moshe Safran - CEO of RSIP Vision USA Guest speaker: Dr. Ester Bonmati, senior research fellow at the Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) at University College London - UCL. Abstract: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a minimally-invasive procedure used to evaluate and treat pancreatobiliary disorders such as pancreatic cancer. EUS involves the insertion of a flexible endoscope into the stomach via the mouth to get detailed ultrasound images and requires advanced skills in both endoscopy and ultrasound image interpretation. In this talk, Dr. Bonmati presents her research on a computer-assisted navigation system for guiding EUS interventions. In particular, she discusses an accuracy study for real-time 3D probe tracking, a new framework for initializing computer-assisted EUS navigation, and the prototype navigation system. She also introduces some challenges that need to be overcome in the future, especially when using ultrasound and artificial intelligence.
