(30 Dec 2014) Greek Coast Guard officials said on Tuesday that 201 Greek passengers have been rescued from the the crippled Greek ferry Norman Atlantic and were either back in Greece or on vessels involved in the rescue mission. But they said passenger lists provided to them by the ship operator indicated that 266 Greek nationals had been on board. It is not clear whether the other 65 passengers listed are missing, or whether mistakes had been made cross checking lists, and determining identities. The search for possible missing people continued on Tuesday in seas off Greece and Albania amid ongoing confusion over how many passengers were on board. At least 11 people were killed after the ferry travelling from Greece to Italy caught fire on Sunday night. More than 400 people were rescued from the ferry, most in daring, nighttime helicopter sorties that persisted despite high winds and seas, after the fire broke out on a car deck. Both Italian and Greek authorities have announced criminal investigations into the cause of the blaze. Greek maritime officials, meanwhile, revealed that the first word about the problems on board the ship came from a passenger, not the crew, calling an emergency number. The fire-tinged vessel was adrift for a third day off the Albanian coast, where two sailors were killed earlier Tuesday when a tow line being deployed apparently snapped, according to Albanian officials. Italian prosecutors have ordered the Norman Atlantic back to Italy as part of a criminal investigation, saying they feared more bodies will be found once the vessel is properly searched given the presence of stowaways and the discrepancies in the names on the manifest and those rescued.
