These 14 pieces are my favourite collection of "easy" pieces. There are lots of similarities to Schumanns "Kinderszenen", as you will probably notice. 'Childhood' is actually not that unknown, but the more people know about it, the better :) Bortkiewicz composed this cycle in 1930, following the novel of Tolstoi of the same name. The russian/ukrainian composer took lessons from Lyadow and traveled around Europe, before the first WW began. Then he went back to Russia; he died in 1952 is Austria. What I like about this work is that it has lots of different emotions and feelings to it. Happy, mourning, exhausted, stressed etc. It just makes so much fun to play through. The death of one's mother is probably the saddest thing that will happen on earth, and putting "Maman" as second lamenting piece and "The death of the mother" as last piece, where all childhood memories apparently are mixed together give a very sad feeling all in all; when I played it the first time, it literally shocked me, and I shook while playing, I even almost couldn't finish it. I hope you enjoy this cycle as much as I did.
