Professor Caitlyn Montross explains why she assigns Labster simulations in advance of chemistry labs like Thin Layer Chromatography. TRANSCRIPT: Every student learns differently. They learn at different paces and some of them really need more visuals than just a picture on skeleton notes. So that's really what drew me to Labster. During the pandemic, it would straight substitute a lab because we couldn't come see each other. But now what I've done, if I use it in a lab setting, it's almost like their pre-lab, and I use it for labs where something might go wrong. So, like, with organic chemistry, one of the ones. I always use it with is Thin Layer Chromatography. Yeah. You know, if your technique isn't quite right, you might end up with streaks or it might be really hard to understand what your plate looks like. And as a student who, you're just learning that concept. And now your experiment didn't go well, it's confusing to understand what happened and what was supposed to happen. So I have them perform the Labster simulation first so they have a better knowledge coming in of what Thin Layer Chromatography is doing what it is supposed to do, what you're supposed to see. And that way when, not when but if, it fails in the lab or doesn't go perfectly, we have a better time trying to figure out what happened and why.
