Performed June 14th, 2025 Composed by Masayoshi Soken Lyricist: Tom Mills Arranged by C. Tom-Wolverton Soloists: Zachary Morehouse, Robert Scattergood, Victoria Holmes, Jim Hitchell, Marisa Sigas, David Silberman Video Editor: Eli Obus https://www.eliobus.com Audio Engineer: Bill Rouse https://billrouseaudio.com Because this music features heavily during one of the most emotional moments in all of Final Fantasy XIV, it is difficult to write notes about it without hinting at spoilers. It's for the best that you only read these notes if you do not care about having the final chapters of a long saga spoiled for you. --------- When a significant loss leaves you with a hole in your heart, the healing process often doesn't involve “moving on” as much as it does “moving forward.” “Close in the Distance” is a song of encouragement for the living sung by those who have passed on. While “Close” can be enjoyed as a rock ballad with no additional context, the in-game experience gradually reveals the song. First, as a low distorted hum, then an instrumental version, and finally, the completed version with lyrics. It is as if the dead are responding to the hero's increasing despair by increasing the volume and clarity of their calls to keep going. I tried to capture that feeling of finding hope somewhere in the desolation I experienced in the game. Starting with just the bass line, then a single voice, then a chord slowly building as new voices join in. This is followed by more instruments and entire sections until the chorus at the end. Each new voice and sound represents a friend reaching through time and space to give the hero a little “nudge” of encouragement to keep moving towards that final mission. “Of Countless Stars” is a variation that plays as the hero is confronted with a battle that is as much psychological as it is physical. It is the last effort of the enemy, before fighting the hero directly, to convince the hero to abandon everything because everything will one day come to a Dead End. This isn't a piece about the strength of mighty warriors going into battle. It is about the strength of just continuing to stand. Through visions of war, plague, apathy, and despair, that song from old friends continues to be heard, reminding the hero that hope still endures.
