The song “Tuxedo Junction” was originally written as an instrumental by Erskine Hawkins, Bill Johnson, and Julian Dash. Subsequently, lyrics were added by Buddy Feyne. The title of the song refers to a streetcar crossing at Tuxedo Park in a Birmingham, Alabama suburb. Introduced by Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra in the late 1930s, ”Tuxedo Junction” was often used as their sign-off song at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, NYC, where they played as one of the house bands. In 1940, the most successful single of the song was recorded by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, reaching the top at No. 1 on the US Billboard Chart. Through the years, numerous other bands, swing orchestras, and solo artists have covered the song, including The Andrews Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Harry James, Frankie Avalon, and Stan Kenton. In 1975, “Tuxedo Junction,” theme song for The Manhattan Transfer, was recorded for their album “The Manhattan Transfer.” The song can also be heard in films, including “The Glenn Miller Story,” “The Gene Krupa Story,” and “The Curse of the Jade Scorpion” (a Woody Allen film). This improvisation of the hit song “Tuxedo Junction” is by pianist Charles Manning.
