Treat-Retreat can be ideal for dogs that fearful of new people, particularly houseguests. First you will need treats that your dog absolutely loves, such as boiled chicken breast, cubed pieces of cheese, hot dogs, liver etc. Also have a few lower value treats such as crunchy dog biscuits, kibble or other food your dog will eat but is not over the moon excited about. a. Have your guest sit comfortably in a chair. Hand them a bowl of treats, then go sit near your dog across the room. b. Instruct your guest to throw treats behind your dog. This takes the social pressure off your dog. Repeat this many times. Also ask your guest to do this without staring at, talking to or otherwise trying to interact with your dog. If you notice your dog's body language is tense and stressed add more distance between her and your visitor, increase the value of treats or give your dog a short break before continuing. c. After many repetitions, your guest may begin to throw treats slightly closer to where they are seated. Understand that it is important to allow your dog to choose how close she is willing to get to the visitor. Do not allow her to be pushed past her comfort level. Your guest can also toss higher value treats closer to themselves and lower value treats further away. d. If the dog is comfortably approaching your guest to eat the treats, have your guest alternate between throwing treats closer, then back behind the dog again. This exercise helps your dog build trust and feel safe. By throwing treats further away your dog has the choice to continue to participate or not. e. If this dog is approaching the guest fully allow them to eat treats from the floor. Make sure they are confident and feeling comfortable before allowing your guest to hand feed.
