He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata after battling prolonged illness. His son confirmed the news of his demise. Mukul Roy was one of the founding members of the All India Trinamool Congress, playing a crucial role alongside Mamata Banerjee in building the party since its formation in 1998. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2006 and served as the party leader in the Upper House from 2009 to 2012. During the UPA-II government, he served as Minister of State for Shipping before becoming Union Railway Minister in 2012. In 2017, Mukul Roy joined the BJP and was elected as an MLA in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, before returning to the Trinamool Congress later that year. His demise marks the end of an important chapter in West Bengal politics.
