The Viennese composer Ignaz Brüll (1846-1907) is mainly known for having been a close friend of Brahms. He studied with Julius Epstein, who was an advocate of Schubert's piano music, and later with the young Gustav Mahler, who was also an Epstein pupil. Brüll's music is tasteful, carefully constructed, and distinctively melodic but rather mild and conservative. A fleeting seventh chord in the third movement of his Suite No. 2 evokes Brahms's gentlest intermezzos for a moment or two; otherwise, Brull's music more closely resembles that of various 19th-century minor masters, Bruch, Reinecke, Burgmüller, or Stephen Heller, than it does that of his famous friends. Brüll composed his only piano sonata in 1893. Like so many Romantic sonatas, it's a long, ambitious work, but not one that challenges any kind of formal orthodoxy. (Schumann and Brahms's piano sonatas from so many decades earlier are, by comparison, radical experiments.) Brull's efforts at filling out larger forms (sonata-allegro with some modifications and rondo in the first and last movements, respectively) are a bit labored, with very predictable harmonic sequences and busy textures that sound created in order to make the piece more of a big, challenging statement than Brüll, a basically lyrical composer, usually attempted.
