Welcome to Part 1 of Innerstanding your Endo – My new series uncovering what women can do holistically to help manage their chronic illness. Breathing is not only something we do automatically that keeps us alive. There’s MUCH more to it: STRESS RELIEF, LOWERING INFLAMMATION, AIDING DIGESTION & IMRPOVING IMMUNITY. So what’s BREATHING got to do with ENDO. Breathing exercises are key to engaging your diaphragm & your abdomen. By breathing properly, you’re oxygenating your blood, ensuring adequate blood flow to your cells, your tissue, your organs and muscles. Secondly, certain types of breathwork can help lower stress in the body. They stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system, helping lower inflammation, strengthen your immune system & aid healing. Endometriosis is an inflammatory condition stemming from immune system dysfunction. Poor blood flow and lymph stagnation contribute to inflammation in the body. This kind of chronic inflammation and lymphatic dysfunction have been connected with the presence and progression of endometriosis. The lymphatic system has been theorized as allowing endometriosis to spread. Endometriotic cells are picked up by the lymph & then transported around the body. Studies have reported that: (1) Endometriotic lesions and endometrial cells have been found in the pelvic lymph nodes AND (2) Women with endo have an impaired immune response with regards to the draining nodes in the uterus – meaning: the immune system isn’t doing a proper job of managing waste in the body – it’s not getting rid of the endometrial cells as it should. How does lymph connect to breath? Aside from movement the DIAPHRAGM is key to lymph flow. The diaphragm is a muscle that pumps lymph around the body via breathing. Through breathwork, you’ll help the diaphragm move lymph throughout the body, aiding waste management. You’ll help maximise blood flow and oxygenation of cells. And you’ll help ease stress and inflammation.
