Every year we notice some issues in the vines with what appear to be nutrient deficiencies, particularly the yellowing of leaves. We did some soil analysis prior to planting, but this year we decided to do leaf analysis to get a better idea of what our current problems are. Our deficiencies are not uncommon for our area. Chris King of Cosecha Farming, our vineyard manager, has made fertigation recommendations to help with some of those deficiencies. As we are on the cusp of veraison (meaning the grapes are changing color), he recommended adding K (potassium) as well. Adding potassium should help with an even fruit set and sugar accumulation. Potassium deficiencies can lead to uneven set, poor sugar accumulation, reduced vigor and yield. We don’t mind reduced yield, but an even set is important, in my opinion, for producing quality wine In our area.
