In August 1964 John Severson interviewed Miki Dora for a feature entitled "Miki Dora Speaks Out - Surf Stuntman". Miki was at a crossroads- regarded by many as one of the best surfers in the world, his beloved Surfrider Beach at Malibu Point was being overrun by the masses, spurred largely by a sudden popularity of the Hollywood film industry to feature Surfing as a centerpiece for the studios most popular movies of the day. Miki dove in as an on-camera talent and consultant- only to get paid by what he grew to despise about surfing and society, and eventually, driving him to an eccentric, shady life either behind bars, or on the run. Charming charismatic, and intelligent yet at the same time deceptive and unscrupulous, he was a walking paradox, making him at once surfing's most loved and most hated. His legacy continues to represent many surfers who see surfing as a counterculture activity based on individuality and rebellion and his performances at first point are still talked about as some of the best of all time.
