On the 11th of May 2013, two top-and-tailing diesels, a class 47 and a class 57, arrived at Derby and handed over the coaches they had brought on the first leg of The Yorkshire Coronation railtour from Kettering via Leicester, Loughborough and East Midlands Parkway over to LMS Princess Coronation class 46233 "Duchess of Sutherland" for her to take to Scarborough and back to Derby, while the stock continued to Kettering and the Duchess made her way back to her home at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley. A steady run in the morning meant arriving slightly early at all stations despite leaving five minutes late from Derby, finishing with arriving seven minutes early at Scarborough, bang on midday. In this video you can see some of her run back, where the driver and fireman certainly didn't hold back! I am certain that she was doing more than the allowed 75mph a number of times, proving that steam still can rule the railways. Listen out for another of my hobbies, church bell ringing, greeting the arrival of the Duchess in Chesterfield, with all ten bells of the Crooked Spire ringing out across the town. See • Yorkshire Royal at Chesterfield (Croo... for more ringing here (and yes, this is a shameless plug for my other channel...). The Duchess was built back in 1938, just down the road from me in Crewe by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Designed by (Sir) William Stanier, she was built un-streamlined, with a single chimney and without smoke deflectors. Numbered 6233 she was fitted with a double chimney in 1941 and then fitted with smoke deflectors in 1946. Withdrawn from service by BR in 1964, she had carried a variety of liveries; most famously LMS red/maroon, but today she is in her later guise as 46233 in BR green. Originally restored by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust at the Midland railway centre after leading a fairly nomadic lifestyle, she had a heavy overhaul in 2011 and is in top form! This was in fact my first ever main line railtour, and it has whetted my appetite for more so some more of these videos may be coming up...
