Family is primary social unit of the society. According to MacIver “family is a group defined by sex relationship sufficiently precise and enduring to provide for the procreation and upbringing of children”. According to Eliott and Merrill “Family is the biological social unit composed of husband, wife and children”. According to Ogburn and Nimkoff “Family is more or less durable association of husband, wife with or without children or of a man or woman alone with children”. Characteristics of family Based on marital relationship. Forms of marriage. Based on a system of nomenclature. An economic provision. A common habitation. Emergent forms of families Reconstituted family. Commuter between household. Living apart together. Same sex couples. Living apart but within a network. Commuters between households Most often, commuters between households may consider one of their usual places of their residence as their main household, and the others as their secondary household. This new type of living arrangement, which involves both individuals and families, deeply affects people’s life and cannot be ignored by official statistics, which should provide policy makers with information with new social facts, trend and needs. Reconstituted families This family is a type of nuclear family which changed into other form. A reconstituted family is the one which is often referred to a ‘step family’. This type of family is still consist as a family with children’s although one of the parents may be a social parents, meaning they might not be their biological parents. This might usually happens if one of their parents died or due to separation or divorce. Same sex couple In this type of family, couples are of same sex, be it men or women. In such type of family, production of children is not needed. However, procreation of children can be done through adoption. Living apart together In this type of family the couple lives in two separated addresses. They are currently not in a cohabiting relationship. Persons involved in living apart together relationship may be of opposite-sex as well as same-sex. A sexual relationship may not be necessary. Living apart but within a network Such type of family is completely based on the support of digital platform. Communication, exchange and support relations within social networks help to maintain adequate levels of well-being. Despite of the structural simplification of the families, in today’s society, families still live inside thick networks of relations and exchanges between relatives.
