A recording of Blessed Martin Luther's setting of the Te Deum, from the 2016 Return to Wittenberg conference. http://www.ReturnToWittenberg.org It is traditionally believed that St. Ambrose wrote the Te Deum when he baptized St. Augustine in the year A.D. 387. As such, it is also known as the "Ambrosian Hymn." Since its initial composition, the Te Deum has been used by the Church as the Gospel Canticle in the prayer office of Matins. Luther believed that the Te Deum is one of the Church's greatest confessions of faith, since it succinctly confesses the Mystery of the Trinity and the work of Christ. This setting of the Te Deum, known in German as "Herr Gott, dich loben wir," is often refered to as "The German Te Deum" because of its popular use in the Lutheran Church after Luther composed it in 1529. Luther based his composition on a traditional Gregorian chant melody for the Te Deum, adapting it to fit the German tongue.
