I'm playing all the tenor pieces I have because why not. Hopefully someone will get some info about how these play, at least compared to each other. Here are the pieces in order of darkest to brightest (sort of), along with some basic thoughts about them: CE Winds Legend 1 .110 Big bottom to the sound, sounds very Ben Webster/Coleman Hawkins-ish. Not exactly the sound I'm going for, but it plays great, especially with the refacing work done. Arnold Montgomery Katana HR 8 Good, well rounded hard rubber sound with a nice softness around the sound, but can be pushed. Good for small-group settings with a stiffer reed than what I played here. Theo Wanne Gaia II 9 Ended up the darkest in the lineup. Sounds like a Florida Link with a more modern feel. Good all-rounder if a bit too inflexible for me. I got this for like $280, so it was a steal! Retro Revival 7th Avenue South .115 Sounds similar to the Gaia but with like 5% more bright. On recordings it sounds very dead, so I don't play it much anymore. It won't do that Sanborn split-tone thing. But it plays really even and controlled. Jody Jazz DV 8* My favorite of my pieces. Very flexible and even, with a unique husky, earthy tone. Plays in the lower register very well for a bright piece. Intonation does get a bit hard to manage above octave-B. Theo Wanne Durga III 9 VERY, VERY BRIGHT! Too much for me, really. Altissimo is almost too easy, and the low notes are difficult. Not flexible at all. Does project really well though, and would be perfect for loud situations. Sometime soon I'll do individual reviews of these pieces, and probably an alto version of this same video. Stay tuned!!
