The Victorian Double Florin (1887-1890) was such a badly designed coin that it earned the nickname "The Barmaid's Grief." In this video, I explain why barmaids across Victorian Britain absolutely HATED this coin and how it caused chaos in pubs every single night. 🍺 WHY WAS IT CALLED THE BARMAID'S GRIEF? The Double Florin was almost EXACTLY the same size as a Crown: → Crown = 5 shillings → Double Florin = 4 shillings → Difference = Just 2.6 millimeters! In dimly lit Victorian pubs with gas lamps and smoky rooms, barmaids couldn't tell them apart. This led to: → Barmaids accidentally accepting Double Florins as Crowns (short-changing themselves) → Dodgy customers passing off Crowns as Double Florins (pocketing the difference) → Absolute chaos every night! The nickname "Barmaid's Grief" wasn't official - the Royal Mint never acknowledged it - but EVERYONE knew. This coin caused confusion, financial loss, and genuine grief for workers across Britain. 💷 WHY DID IT ONLY LAST 4 YEARS? The Royal Mint quickly realized they'd messed up. The Double Florin lasted just FOUR YEARS (1887-1890) before being withdrawn. One of the shortest-lived British coins in history! Today, Double Florins are collectible because: → Only minted for 4 years (scarce!) → Fascinating failed experiment → Part of Victoria's Golden Jubilee celebrations → Beautiful coin design despite the confusion 🔍 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO: → What a Double Florin is and why it was introduced → The exact size difference that caused the problem → How barmaids and pub customers were affected → Why the Royal Mint withdrew it after just 4 years → Why Double Florins are collectible today If you're interested in Victorian coins, British history, or just love a good design disaster story, this is for you! 📊 YOUTUBE CHAPTERS (Timestamps) ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 0:00 - The Barmaid's Grief Introduction 0:12 - What is a Double Florin? 0:39 - The Design Problem Explained 1:03 - Size Comparison: Only 2.6mm Difference! 1:26 - How Barmaids Were Short-Changed 2:03 - Why It Got the Nickname 2:30 - The Royal Mint's Quick Fix 2:41 - Why It's Collectible Today 2:51 - Subscribe for More Victorian Coin Disasters 👍 ENJOYED THIS VIDEO? → LIKE if you learned something new → SUBSCRIBE for more Victorian coin stories → COMMENT: Have you ever been short-changed because of a confusing coin?
